TOP SIGHTSEEINGS

Jakar Dzong, also known as Jakar Yugyal Dzong, stands on a ridge overlooking the Chamkhar Valley in Bumthang. Often called the “Castle of the White Bird,” it is closely connected with the valley’s rich religious and political history. According to Bhutan’s heritage records, the dzong was founded by Pel Ngage Wangchuk and dates to 1540. Another historical tradition associates its establishment with Lam Ngagi Wangchuk, who is said to have chosen the site after seeing a white bird, regarded as an auspicious sign. The dzong later became an important fortress for defending eastern Bhutan and was associated with Bhutan’s first hereditary king, Ugyen Wangchuck. Today, Jakar Dzong remains an important landmark of Bumthang, reflecting Bhutanese architecture, history, and spiritual heritage. Its hilltop setting also offers visitors impressive views across the surrounding valley.

Kurje Lhakhang: A Sacred Landmark of Bumthang

Kurje Lhakhang, located in the Chokhor Valley of Bumthang, is one of Bhutan’s most revered Buddhist sites. The name “Kurje” refers to the sacred body imprint associated with Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), who is believed to have meditated here and left his imprint on a rock face. This sacred site draws pilgrims and visitors seeking a connection with Bhutan’s spiritual heritage.

The temple complex is an important place of worship and part of Bumthang’s rich religious landscape. Visitors can experience its serene surroundings, traditional Bhutanese architecture, and the devotion of pilgrims who come to offer prayers and perform circumambulation. Kurje Lhakhang also hosts the annual Kurje Tshechu, a religious festival featuring traditional masked dances and the display of a Guru Thangka.

A visit to Kurje offers a peaceful glimpse into Bhutan’s enduring Buddhist traditions.

Jambay Lhakhang, located in Choekhor Valley of Bumthang, is one of Bhutan’s oldest and most revered temples. According to Bhutanese tradition, it was built in the seventh century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo as one of 108 temples constructed to subdue a demoness and support the spread of Buddhism. The temple is closely associated with Guru Rinpoche, who is believed to have visited the site and blessed it. Its name, Jampa, refers to Maitreya, the Future Buddha, whose image is among the temple’s important sacred relics. Jambay Lhakhang is also renowned for the annual Jambay Lhakhang Drup, featuring traditional masked dances, religious rituals, and the famous Mewang fire ceremony. Visiting this historic temple offers travelers an opportunity to experience Bumthang’s living spiritual heritage and timeless cultural traditions.

Mebar Tsho, meaning “Burning Lake,” is one of Bumthang’s most sacred sites and an important destination for visitors interested in Bhutanese Buddhist heritage. Located at the entrance to Tang Valley, about 30 minutes from Chamkhar town, Mebar Tsho is actually a gorge rather than a conventional lake. The site is closely associated with Tertön Pema Lingpa, Bhutan’s renowned 15th-century treasure revealer. According to tradition, Pema Lingpa came here in search of sacred treasures believed to have been hidden by Guru Rinpoche. The name “Burning Lake” is connected with the traditional account of Pema Lingpa entering the water carrying a butter lamp and returning with sacred treasures while the lamp remained lit. Today, visitors can pause beside the gorge, observe prayer flags and experience the quiet spiritual atmosphere of this remarkable place in Bumthang.
